After graduation, he moved briefly to Munich to work on fossil fish with Prof. Dehm. However, as Hans-Peter Schultze (2000) has related, he did not find the inspiration he expected and so returned to his Scandanavian roots. He found what he needed within the Paleozoologiska afdelningen in the Riksmuseet at Stockholm where he began to work on the Upper Devonian crossopterygians of Bergisch Gladbach with Ørvig, while becoming a student of the late Erik Jarvik (see previous Ichthyolith Issuesfor information on both these scientists). Jarvik became Jessen's mentor, their personalities and character resonating. He finished his Licenciate (equivalent then to Ph.D.) in Stockholm in 1965, comparing crossopterygians from Bergisch Gladbach with relevant material including North American Onychodus. Hans received his Swedish doctorate in 1972 and then returned to Cologne University having been offered an assistantship in the geology department. He went on to become curator of the palaeontological collections and earned "ausserplanmaessige" professorship status (title, teaching duties, but not full position as professor) in 1980. Hans fostered three graduate students--Lars Friman, who is now an engineering geologist; Ms P. Kuester, now married to palaeontologist Prof. Oekentorp in Münster; and Marcus Otto, who is now working at the Humboldt Museum in Berlin [ed.]
