Publications include the special IGCP 406 edited issue (vol. 49, issue 2) of Acta Geologica Polonica(Ginter & Wilson 1999) which contains eight research papers originally presented at the 1998 meeting of IGCP 406 in Warsaw. Ginter also authored one of the articles in the same volume.
Russia:
Participation by Russian scientists was more extensive than that for any other nation during 1999. At the IGCP 406 Meeting and 4th Baltic Stratigraphic Conference, Jurmala, Latvia, the following Russians participated: Abushik A., Afanassieva O., Antoshkina A., Belyaeva N., Beznosova T., Chekhovich P., Evdokimova I., Ivanov A., Kolesnik L., Krupina N., Lukin V., Matukhin R., Mel'nikov S., Menner V., Modzalevskaya T., Tel'nova O. At the XIII Geological Congress of the Komi Republic " Geological and mineralogical resources of European North-East of Russia", Syktyvkar, the following represented IGCP 406: Abushik A., Antoshkina A., Belyaeva N., Beznosova T., Evdokimova I., Ivanov A., Kolesnik L., Kuzmin A., Lukin V., Mel'nikov S., Menner V., Modzalevskaya T.,Sobolev D., Tel'nova O., Tsyganko V., Zhemchugova V., Zhuravlev A., Yudina A. These IGCP members participated in the XLV Session of the All-Russian Palaeontological Society "Palaeontology within the Natural Sciences", St.Petersburg, Russia: Evdokimova I., Ivanov A., Menner V., Modzalevskaya T., Tsyganko V., Zhuravlev A. In addition, V.S. Tsyganko attended the Session of the Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee (Devonian Commission) in the Northern Caucausus, Essentuki; A. Ivanov participated in the International Meeting "Major Events in Early Vertebrate Evolution: Palaeontology, Phylogeny and Development", London, U.K, and in the 3rd Meeting of the European Elasmobranch Association, Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. A. Antoshkina and T. Beznosova participated in the Regional Science Conference "Geology of the Western Urals on the Boundary of XXI Century",Perm, Russia.
Field projects by Russians includes work by Beznosova T.M., Melnikov S.V. and Lukin V.U. in the Kozhim River Basin (Subpolar Urals), Upper Ordovician-Silurian sequences; work by Zhuravlev A., and Kossovaya O. in the Polar Urals (Lemva River basin), Upper Devonian (Frasnian-Famennian) - Lower Carboniferous in shelf margin facies, and in the Main Devonian Field (Russian Platform), Frasnian, including borehole material. Thesis defences by Russians in 1999 include that by Sobolev D: Stratigraphy and ostracods of Tournaisian of Northern and Nearpolar Urals and Chernyshev Ridge; and by Yudina A: Biostratigraphy and conodonts of Upper Devonina of the Chernyshev Ridge and Subpolar Urals.
Selected individual reports follow (for publications please see the attached Publications List for IGCP 406): A. Abushik studied Silurian ostracodes from Kotelny Island, continued to study Silurian ostracodes of the Timan- Urals region, and began to study the Silurian ostracodes and Devonian leperditicopids from Taimyr as well. In collaboration with Drs L. Sarv and T. Meidla (Estonia), comparisons of the Silurian leperditicopids of Podolia and Baltic regions were made.
O. Afanassieva continues to work with osteostracans from different regions. She is working on the chapter "Osteostraci" for the ancient fish volume of the handbook "Fossil vertebrates of Russia and adjacent countries" (Paleontological Institute of RAS, Moscow). At the Jurmala meeting she reported the results of the joint studies of microremains of tremataspidid osteostracans from Severnaya Zemlya Archipelago (Afanassieva, Märss, 1999, abstracts).
A. Antoshkina continued her research on Palaeozoic reef associations of the Ural Mountains, Russia, and other areas, and to prepare materials for the field-guide to ICGP-406 Meeting in the Subpolar Urals scheduled for Syktyvkar in 2000.
N. Belyaeva participated in field work in 1999 in South Timan, and reported at the Jurmala meeting on sedimentological and faunal changes in outcrops on the Lyael Stream, correlated either with the Kellwasser Event or representing a local catastrophe.
T. Beznosova, during cooperative field work in the Kozhim River Basin (Subpolar Urals), studied Upper Ordovician-Silurian sequences which were marked bed by bed and sampled. A presentation on Silurian reference sections in the Subpolar Urals was made at the Jurmala meeting, and studies continue on brachiopods from these sections.
I. Evdokimova continued study of Frasnian ostracodes from the Main Devonian Field in respect to biostratigraphy and palaeoecology, and began to study Devonian microostracodes from Kotelny Island (Novosibirsk Islands, Russia). The results of both these topics were presented at the 4th Baltic Stratigraphical Conference and the IGCP- 406 meeting, respectively. During the summer she also took part in field trips within the Main and Central Devonian Fields (Russia). She was also able to help clarify the age of the Anderson River fish-bearing beds in northern Canada (see report of H. P. Schultze, Germany).
