Sciences (Syktyvkar, Russia);
V. Yu. Lukin, Institute of Geology of the Komi Science Centre, Ural Division of Russian Academy of Sciences
(Syktyvkar, Russia);
V. S. Tsyganko, Institute of Geology of the Komi Science Centre, Ural Division of Russian Academy of Sciences
(Syktyvkar, Russia);
P. Männik, Institute of Geology at Tallinn Technical University (Tallinn, Estonia).
Main problems discussed:
1. pre-conference excursion to Timan;
2. contents and structure of guidebooks for both excursions;
3. organization of meeting and excursions;
4. preparation of manuscript for the Timan-Urals volume of the Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences
(to be published in 2000, issue No. 2);
5. preparation of presentations for the Riga meeting (Sept.-Oct. 1999).
Main results:
1. Many details of the excursion were finalized. The excursion will be organized in cooperation by the Institute of Geology of the Komi Science Centre, Ural Division of Russian Academy of Sciences (Syktyvkar) and by the Timan-Pechora Scientific Research Centre (Ukhta). The person responsible for the organization of the Timan excursion is N. V. Belyaeva.
The excursion will last 5 days + one day for travel from Ukhta to Syktyvkar. Two camps are planned: the first one close to Ukhta and the other one on the Lyael River.
Day one: the Domanic facies will be studied in two sections on the Chut River and in one section on the
Domanic River. Later, an excursion to the Yarega oil-shaft will be organized.
Day two: sections in the Podgornyj, Sarachoj and Bel'gop quarries will be studied. Sediments of maximum
regression and the initial stage of transgression will be demonstrated (back-reef sediments, large
corals etc.).
Day three: Early Famenian sediments containing rich faunas of placoderms will be demonstrated in
sections on the Izhma River. In the afternoon the group will move to the next camp on the Lyael
River.
Day four: sections on the Lyael River will be demonstrated. Basinal facies containing rich fish faunas, and
an event interval (Lower Kellwasser?) will be examined.
Day five: upper Frasnian reefs near the Sed'yu village will be demonstrated.
Day six: travel to Syktyvkar.
2. The main features of the guidebook(s) were discussed, with final decisions to be made by the organizers of CAPV-2000.
3. The problems connected with logistics of CAPV-2000 (organizing committee, finances, rooms, equipment, publications, transport etc.) were discussed.
4. Preliminary versions of manuscripts (Antoshkina: Silurian of the Timan-Urals region; Beznosova: Silurian brachiopods in Timan-Urals region) were discussed, and some corrections and additions were made. The final versions of manuscripts were to be in Tallinn before Oct. 15, 1999.
5. Possible presentations (posters) about the Silurian and Devonian sequence in the Timan-Urals region for the Riga meeting were discussed and the abstracts prepared. Also, a special poster giving preliminary information about the regions and sections to be visited during excursion of the CAPV-2000 was planned. Participation of P. Männik in the work-shops in Ukhta and Syktyvkar, and in the field work in the Subpolar Urals, was financed by IGCP Projekt 406. In total, 700 USD were used for travel costs and accommodation.
