Fasciola anterior

This anterior end of an adult Fasciola includes all or part of all major organ systems. At the anterior end is a mouth surrounded by a small oral sucker which leads to a slightly larger pharynx. The intestine immediately bifurcates into two ceca, and the ceca send of numerous lateral diverticula. The acetabulum is the dark circle just behind the intestinal bifurcation. The lighter circle just ahead of the acetabulum is the cirrus pouch, and the curved cirrus is visible inside it.

Posterior to the acetabulum are the dark coils of the uterus, filed with tiny eggs, but the ovary cannot be clearly discerned. The black lateral bands of vitelline follicles drain their contents by two curving vitelline ducts which unite near the midline and form a small vitelline reservoir. The vitelline reservoir overlays the larger seminal receptacle.

The large intestinal ceca are clearly visible at the top of the photo. To the bottom, they are in the background overlaid by the finer branches of the anterior testis.
