Metorchis adult

The body shape of this small (5 mm long) parasite is pyriform. A small oral sucker and larger pharynx are visible at the anterior (top) end. The intestinal ceca are large and proceed to near the posterior of the body. In the anterior half of the body are lateral fields of vitellaria with the coiled uterus in between. The ovary is behind the uterus and the diagonal testes are posterior to the ovary. Vitelline ducts can be seen just between ovary and uterus. The clear structure between the testes and emerging at the posterior end of the body is the excretory vesicle, which is present in some form in all Digenea but is often obscured by other organs.
