Rhynchobothrium adult

This is a short parasite, only about 1 cm long. An entire worm is shown in the right photo. It is segmented, but the details of the reproductive system are not clear. In fact, the reproductive system of trypanorhynchs is so similar to other major cestode taxa, that specimens lacking a scolex are difficult to identify as trypanorhynchs.

The left photo shows the scolex, in this species a rather elongated structure. At the tip are four, hook-covered tentacles. The two lobed projections from the tip of the scolex are bothridia. At the base of the scolex, can be seen two of the four elongated bulbs which control movement of the tentacles. The ducts connecting bulbs to tentacles are barely visible in this photo.
