Echeneibothrium adult

These are small (1-2 cm long) tapeworms. Note in the top photo that the scolex is large relative to the size of the body. In the scolex detail (lower photo) you can see that there are four, leaf-like bothridia. Each bothridium is divided into numerous loculi. The size and shape of these loculi are thought to conform to the surface topography of the particular portion of the host's intestine that the parasite inhabits. Between the bothridia at the tip of the scolex is the myzorhynchus.
