Neoechinorhynchus male

The photo on the left is an entire male, about 10 mm long. The proboscis (top left) is globular. Two long lemnisci trail into the body cavity. The body wall is thick and contains several giant nuclei (at least four are visible on the dorsal side of the parasite). The two large testes are close together in this photo, appearing to be a single organ with a central constriction. The cement gland is the large, dark red oval just posterior to the lighter red testes. The cement gland is syncytial. At the posterior margin of the cement gland is a small, triangular cement reservoir that leads into a wide, clear ejaculatory duct. Just to the left of the cement reservoir and ejaculatory duct is the seminal vesicle. At the posterior of the specimen, withdrawn, is the copulatory bursa.

The enlargement of the anterior end (upper right photo) shows the globular proboscis with its short neck. The proboscis is covered with a small number (18) of large hooks, but they are barely discernible in this photo. The proboscis receptacle is visible on the left side of the body cavity and the lemnisci are on the right.

The lower right photo shows a different male, with its copulatory bursa everted.
