Cysticercus

The photo on the left shows a whole cysticercus after chemical clearing. The large fluid-filled bladder, stained light yellow, contains a single scolex on the left side. The scolex in this photo is C-shaped. At the tip is a small black area which, if you look closely, comprises numerous hooks.

The photo on the right shows a cysticercus that has been everted by applying pressure to the cyst. It would appear the same soon after ingestion by a carnivore, where chemical cues in the intestine would have stimulated the scolex to evert on its own. Then, the bladder remnants at the posterior end would detach and an adult worm would begin growing.
