Online Virtualized Microscope Tutorial
(under development by Faculty of Science DigiTLE)
Students will be able to explore the art and science of microscopy though the use of a virtualized microscopy tutorial. Developed in Adobe Flash and destined to be an Open Education Resource for not only the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta, but across all universities and high schools across the province. Developed as a collaborative project between the departments of Biology and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences within the Faculty of Science, this tutorial is designed to allow students with little or no microscopy experience to develop an appreciation for how microscopes work. The tutorial starts with a general microscope that would be common to all areas of inquiry, and through the use of a modular development plan, is capable of supporting any specialized scopes. Currently the tutorial is under development and will have support for advanced compound, stereo and polarizing microscopes.
