These "hookworms" are distinctive because of the well developed cutting plates in their buccal capsule, adapted for blood feeding. They are serious parasites of humans and other mammals, capable of causing anemia and death in heavy infections. Adults are about 10 mm long. The infection of the host is via skin penetration by the larvae, a rather uncommon mode of transmission for a nematode.
