Schistosoma miracidium

The anterior end of this miracidium points to the top. The body is shield-shaped and is covered by epidermal plates bearing cilia. The plates are not visible but the cilia can be seen in profile on the anterior of the body in this miracidium. The stained cells inside the miracidium include some penetration glands, visible as pink masses in the thickest part of the body, and a mass of germinal cells, also staining pink, at the posterior end. The penetration glands facilitate entry into the snail first intermediate host, and the germinal cells form the mother sporocyst which establishes in the snail.
