Cyathocephalus adult

The scolex of this tapeworm and its relatives is weakly developed. In this case, only a shallow depression is visible (top photo). The parasite is polyzoic (lower photo), but its body is not divided into distinct proglottids. Thus there is internal but not external metamerism. The small red dots on the lateral margins of the body are vitellaria but they obscure the testes which are beneath them. The large, bright red circles are the location of the genital atrium, but the other reproductive organs are obscured.
