Gryocotyle in situ

This photo illustrates the attachment of Gyrocotyle to the intestine of its host. The intestine runs along the bottom of the photo. The parasite is on the top. Its large, uterus filled with golden-colored eggs is prominent. This cross section provides good evidence for the lack of a gut. The highly folded posterior rosette is used for attachment. Note that the villi beneath the rosette appear somewhat distorted compared to those on either side of the parasite, but that this parasite does not appear to cause major damage to the host.
