Palmer & R. Koss Annotated Bibliography: Each student will write a short (250 word) annotated bibliography of three papers from the primary scientific literature on any aspect of the biology of a single genus of invertebrate that appeals. A sample annotated bibliography provides tips on how to approach this assignment. Before beginning, be sure you know how to avoid charges of plagiarism. Still need help? Check out the best annotated bibliographies from previous years. Want inspiration? Browse some cool research papers on invertebrates, or check out some of these links. To search for papers on a genus (simply enter your genus name and search!), try the following databases: Biological Abstracts (only useful for papers since 1989) Science Citation Index (Web of Science) (very useful for finding recent papers that cite a specific older paper) JSTOR (helpful for finding papers from the pre-digital era, even back to 1665!; journal coverage is limited though) iSpecies (an amazing mashup site that searches databases and the web all at once! search with either Latin or common names) Or try other BioSciences databases. To browse or receive RSS notices about the latest papers on a particular genus, have a look at the UBio taxonomic RSS aggregator, which provides taxonomic browsing of thousands of articles from hundreds of journals. You can select taxonomic groups or input your own species lists for monitoring. Way cool. ON-LINE SUBMISSION: You may submit the electronic version of your annotated bibliographies here. Remember, though, you must also submit a paper copy to your TA in lab by the posted deadline, as explained in the lab guide.

Lecture & Laboratory Study Materials: View the entire classification of animals (to subclass) as in the course text or check out the classification of particular groups at ZooBank, GenBank, or the Integrated Taxonomic Information Server.     Browse the Tree of Life of animal phyla as followed in Zool 250 and review key characters defining major branches. Having trouble remembering some of the material you saw in lab? Maybe the study images of prepared slides and dissections will help. Still mulling over key concepts or processes discussed in lecture? Some entertaining and informative animations are available for review or self test. Self-testing exams may help you prepare for lecture and laboratory exams. Curious about the meaning of scientific names of animals or body parts? Search the table of Greek & Latin roots for clues.
