See ordering information at the bottom of this page for books mentioned.
The past few years have seen the publication of books
that give prominent coverage to Mesozoic fishes. Three general categories
of these might be mentioned: symposium volumes focussing on Mesozoic fishes, treatments of fossil fishes of all ages,
and treatments of fossils from particular localities.
Symposium volumes and Festschrifts:
Origin and Phylogenetic Interrelationships of Teleosts

Eichstätt Symposium Volume: Mesozoic Fishes - Systematics and Paleoecology (1996)
Edited by Arratia and Viohl, this well-produced volume contains numerous scientific papers originally presented at the 1993 Mesozoic Fishes meeting in Eichstätt, Germany. The papers deal with systematics, faunal assemblages, and paleoecology of worldwide fossil chondrichthyans, sarcopterygians, primitive actinopterygians, and teleosts.

General treatments of fossil fishes:
Long Gets Rise Out of Fishes
Another in the first category is John A. Long's "The Rise of Fishes", published
in 1995 by Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, USA, 224 pp. Also
lavishly illustrated, Long's book includes 300 colour photos and drawings.
Chapters are organized taxonomically, but much of the text and many illustrations
deal with Mesozoic fishes.
Frickhinger's Fossil Fish Finder
Another example is Karl A. Frickhinger's Fossilien Atlas Fische, published
in 1991 by Mergus, Verlag fur Natur- und Heimtierkunde Baensch, Melle, Germany,
1088 pp. The work includes colour photos, drawings, and brief descriptions
of more than 900 genera of fishes known from fossils. The photos were taken
by Frickhinger during visits to collections around the world.
Fishes Discovered by Maisey
Also in the first category is John Maisey's book "Discovering Fossil Fishes,"
an attractively illustrated and reasonably thorough introduction to the
fossil record of fishes. Published by Henry Holt & Co. in 1996, the
book is based on material gathered for the new fossil fish exhibits at the
American Museum of Natural History. Many of the fossil examples are from
the Cretaceous of Brazil.

Volumes focussing on particular deposits:
In the third category are recent volumes treating the paleontology of important
Mesozoic fossil localities. One is John Maisey's edited volume Santana Fossils,
an Illustrated atlas, published in 1991 by TFH Publications, Neptune, New
Jersey, USA, 224 pp., devoted to the important Cretaceous assemblage in
Brazil.
Another is Solnhofen: a Study in Mesozoic Palaeontology edited by K. W.
Barthel, N. H. M Swinburne, and S. C. Morris and published by Cambridge
University Press. Based on Barthel's earlier book Solnhofen: Ein Blick in
die Erdgeschichte, the newer work is aimed at a more technical audience
and includes extensive discussion of invertebrates, geology, and taphonomy.
Also about Solnhofen paleontology is K. A. Frickhinger's Die Fossilien von
Solnhofen/The Fossils of Solnhofen. Written in both German and English,
this treatment is aimed at a more general audience and includes more than
600 of Frickhinger's excellent colour photos, of which more than 100 are
Jurassic fishes.
Brief Reviews Invited
Readers are invited to submit brief book reviews to The Compleat Mesoangler.
If interested, write a review of 300 words or less, giving special attention
to issues relating to Mesozoic fishes. You may review recently published
books of special interest to readers of TCM, either monographs or edited
volumes, including any of the books listed above. Acceptance, editing, and
publication of reviews will be at the discretion of the editor.
