Abstact:

I’m doing a fine scale habitat selection project on American marten (Martes americana) in B.C.’s boreal forest.  I use winter backtracking to follow the movements of individual animals and to determine how they are using their habitat.  I have divided their activities into four categories and I am comparing resource selection between these groups as well as between sex and age classes. It seems that marten are most selective for their den sites, followed by foraging sites and then by scent mark locations and travel routes. This behavioural focus will provide insight on habitat selection that is missing from the larger scale analyses that are more common.
