University of Alberta

Immunology & Infection (2012-13)

The Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, and Medical Microbiology & Immunology offer a BSc Honors or Specialization program in Immunology and Infection.

This is a broadly based program that considers the full range of host responses to pathogens that occur in living organisms. The diversity of infectious agents and their adaptations in response to host immune systems will be central to the program.

While a detailed understanding of the vertebrate immune system is a core aspect, the program will not be medically oriented. However, it should be equally valuable to persons pursuing future studies in medicine or any other facet of pathogen biology or organismal responses to pathogens.

The program will have three broad and overlapping major themes: function of the innate and adaptive immune system in a diversity of organisms, b: biology of prokaryotic, eukaryotic and viral pathogens (and symbionts), and c: biology of host-pathogen (symbiont) interactions including mechanisms of pathogenesis, immune evasion strategies, host responses, and co-evolution.

Although all students should be exposed to all three themes, the program should be flexible enough to permit students to sub-stream within it, with some emphasizing immunology, and others focusing more on pathogen biology.
