Undergraduate Student Awards and Scholarships
Donald W. Clarke Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
Eligibility: Open to full-time, non-graduating undergraduate students in Biological Sciences who would like to undertake a summer research project in animal physiology or developmental biology. Students may not hold this award simultaneously with either an NSERC or AHFMR summer award.
Value: $4500 (plus top-up)
Application: Interested students must find a faculty mentor in the Department of Physiology or the Department of Biological Sciences and in collaboration with him/her prepare a research proposal that clearly specifies the role of the student and the training value to the student. The mentor must sign a statement on the application indicating he/she is prepared to subsidize this award in the amount of $1125 (minimum) in order for it to at least equal the value of an NSERC Undergraduate Scholarship ($5625).

NSERC PGS M
Available to students in their fourth year of an eligible undergraduate program (and to first year graduate students) who intend to pursue in the following year full-time graduate studies at the master's or doctoral level in one of the areas of the Natural Sciences or Engineering. Applicant must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. Information and application forms (FORM 201) can be found on the NSERC website at: www.nserc.ca
Requirements: GPA of at least 3.5 in each of the last two completed years of study.
Value: $17,300 (for one year).
Department Deadline: Early October.
NSERC Summer Studentship (USRA)
Available to students registered full-time in an eligible academic program leading to a bachelor's degree with a major or honors concentration in one of the Natural Sciences or in Engineering. Student must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year of university study (or two academic terms) of her/her bachelor's degree at the time they hold the award. Requirements: GPA of at least 3.0 in their program up to the time of application.
Value: at least $1,406.25/month (for 4 months)

AHFMR Summer Studentship
Available to undergraduate students with an exceptional academic record who wish to participate in summer research in a medical or health-related field. (Students who are currently in the last term of their undergraduate degrees must have applied either to Medical School or to a graduate program that would start in the coming Fall). Value : Approximately $1,300/month (the award is tenable for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 4 months during period May to August)

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Awards AstraZeneca Undergraduate Scholarship in Biology

Conditions : To be awarded once every three years to a student with superior academic achievement entering their fourth year of studies in Honors or Specialization Biology in the Faculty of Science. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing. In the event that a suitable candidate cannot be found in Biology, this award may be given to a student in the fourth year of either honors or specialization Chemistry or Pharmacology.

University of Alberta Science Undergraduate Society Leadership Scholarship

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in the second, third, or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated involvement in extracurricular and community activities and academic standing. Preference will be given to a student who has volunteered with the University of Alberta Science Undergraduate Society.

Henry Hearn Memorial Scholarship in Plant Biology

Lakshmi Memorial Scholarship

Organization of Botany Students Award

Conditions: Awarded annually to an undergraduate student who has taken one Botany course in Plant Biology and has achieved a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.3. The award shall be based on contribution to the Botany Department and involvement in the activities of the Organization of Botany students. This award may be given to a full-time student taking less than a full normal course load. Preference will be given to students in the Plant Biology program.

Bill Paranchych Memorial Scholarship

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement, who is not in receipt of another major award, entering fourth year Honors or Specialization Microbiology or Cell Biotechnology. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing.
Donor: Endowed by family and friends, in memory of Bill Paranchych, Professor of Microbiology and former Chair of Microbiology.

William Rowan Memorial Prizes
Field of Study: Ecology, Systematics and Evolution, or Physiology and Developmental Biology who are doing studies in Animal Biology.
