University of Alberta

Graduate Community

There are many support systems in place for graduate students at the department level (BGSA, mentor program, administrative support) and at the University level (Graduate Students' Association, Career and Academic workshops, Financial Aid Office and Health Services, to name a few). A "Meet The New Students and Staff" party is held in the department at the beginning of each term so that new students can meet other graduate students, Faculty and administrative staff. Events are held throughout the year organized by the BGSA, GSA and other University associations. We have a long tradition of graduate student excellence, with our graduate students winning various awards ranging from "Poster Award" at a Canadian Society of Ornithologists' Meeting and at the International Petroleum Environmental Conference in Houston, Texas, to "Best Student Presentation" at the International Echinoderm Conference held in Munich, Germany. Our most recent award winner received the Isabel Cookson Award given by the Botanical Society of America.
