INTRODUCTION
This manual summarizes the guidelines and policies of the Department of Biological Sciences regarding graduate student affairs. It is neither a legal document nor a definitive statement of departmental or FGSR policy. It is a guide to the more routine and frequent matters that arise. The manual was compiled from: 1) information gathered from former departments that comprise the Department of Biological Sciences, 2) policy established at meetings of Graduate Student Program Committee, Biological Sciences Executive Committee and Biological Sciences Council, 3) extensive regulations in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) Graduate Program Manual , and 4) suggestions from many staff.
The manual should answer many of the typical questions asked by graduate students, both new and seasoned veterans, and academic staff regarding graduate study in the Department of Biological Sciences. In the event of conflict of interpretation, University policies will be followed. The manual is available on the departmental website: www.biology.ualberta.ca/academic programs/Graduate/Documents.
