Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA)
 
There are limited numbers of GRAs available for continuing students who: · must be away from campus to conduct their research project  
· are near the end of their program and require time to focus on thesis preparation

Bill Shostak Wildlife Award  
- one award each year @ $10,000
 
 
D. Alan Birdsall Memorial Scholarship  
- one award each year @ $7,000
 
 
Donald M. Ross Scholarship  
- one award each year @ $2,800
 
 
University of Alberta FGSR Research Travel Award  
- supports travel to research conferences, museums, etc.  
- available to each student once, up to $800 ·
 
 
Department of Biological Sciences Travel Award  
- supports travel to research conferences, museums, etc.  
- available to each student once, up to $300 ·
 
 
Graduate Students Association Travel Funds

McAfee Estate Scholarships  
- for botanical or zoological research

The University of Alberta "General Awards Competition" takes place each February. Graduate students can find out more information and download application forms here. Application forms are also available from the the Executive Secretary, Associate Chair (Graduate Studies), Department of Biological Sciences. Deadline for submission of applications to the Department is early January and incoming students must be accepted in a degree program at that time. General awards include:
 
 
Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize  
- For Ph.D. students who have completed 2 or more years of their program  
- Research productivity is the main criteria for this award  
- Major scholarship holders may apply  
- Granted for one year @ $5,000
 
 
Dissertation Fellowship  
- For Ph.D. students with Candidacy Examination completed and within 1 year of completing their degree program  
- Granted for one year @ $18,000 plus tuition and fees
 
 
Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship  
- For full-time Ph.D. students who have completed one year of graduate study  
- This is the most prestigious graduate award administered by the University of Alberta 
- Granted for 2 years @ $22,000 per year plus tuition and fees
 
 
Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship 
- For full-time Ph.D. students who have completed one year of graduate study  
- Granted for 1 year @ between $7,000 and $10,500 
- Recipients will be offered partial GTAs to guarantee that total award package is worth more than regular GTA plus the Intersession Bursary
 
 
Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship 
- For entering or continuing full-time students in M.Sc. program  
- Granted for 1 year @ between $6,200 and $9,300  
- Recipients will be offered partial GTAs to guarantee that total award package is worth more than regular GTA plus the Intersession Bursary

AIF Studentships  
- These awards are for students in Science and Engineering related disciplines  
- Valued @ $20,000 plus $1,500 research allowance per year for 2 years (MSc and PhD program) and renewable annually for up to 5 years (PhD program) 
- Winners who hold NSERC awards are eligible for a top-up of up to $7,000 
- Deadlines: early September and February  
- Applications available at AIF
 
 
AHFMR Studentships  
- These awards are for students in biomedical and health related disciplines  
- Valued @ $20,000 plus $1,500 research allowance per year for up to 3 (MSc program) or 5 (PhD program) years  
- Winners who hold NSERC awards are eligible for a top-up of up to $7,000 
- Department Deadlines: April and September 
- Applications available at AHFMR
 
 
NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS-M and PGS-D)  
- These awards are for Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents and support two years of postgraduate study  
- Valued @ $17,300 per year for PGS-M Scholarships and $19,100 per year for PGS-D Scholarships  
- Deadline: early October 
- Applications available at NSERC
 
 
NSERC Postgraduate Industrial Scholarships  
- This award matches the interest of a faculty member, the needs of an industrial sponsor and the skills of the student  
- These awards are for Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents and support two years of postgraduate study  
- Industry partner contributes $6,000 per year for 2 years  
- NSERC contributes $15,000 per year for 2 years  
- No application deadline 
- Applications available at NSERC
 
 
Support Following Completion of a Major Scholarship
 
 
Following completion of a major scholarship, students will automatically be awarded a GTA that will run up until the end of the 3rd (Masters) or 5th (Ph.D.) year of the graduate program (or until thesis defense, whichever comes first). Major awards considered in this category include NSERC, AHFMR, AIF, Province of Alberta Graduate Scholarship, Province of Alberta Graduate Fellowship, University of Alberta M.Sc./Ph.D. Scholarship and University of Alberta FS Chia Scholarships.
