5.0 Reports

5.1 News from CSZ Council meeting

It was suggested at CSZ council that more participation be solicited from sections in the process of submitting nominations for the Cameron Award. A positive change in support of encouraging applications is the ability to make electronic submissions. The local organizing committee from Vancouver indicated that there were 270 registrants and that they had awarded between 60 and 70 Student Travel Awards. The student lunch was well attended. It was suggested at CSZ Council that the annual auction proceeds be split among all sections effective 2011. It was revealed at CSZ Council that no applications were received for the Margolis Award again last year. Submission of applications was encouraged.

5.2 Finances

Al Shostak reported that the Section finances were above the financial cap. Mike Duffy indicated that these excess funds would be used to support the Parasitology Symposium and a one-time only student travel award in support of attendance at ICOPA 2010.

5.3 Recognition Committee

It was revealed that no nominations were received for the Wardle Award. It was recommended that nominations be put forward for 2011.

5.4 Student awards

The judges for the Murray Fallis Award were Todd Smith and Al Shostak. There was strong competition for this award this year. This award will be conferred at the banquet. The ICOPA Award Committee is nearing completion of deliberations.

6.0 Business

6.1 Symposium 2010

Drs. James, Haines, and Palmer gave excellent seminars. The Symposium was well organized and attended. Special thanks was made to Carl Lowenberger for his efforts in coordinating speakers. The Section expressed their appreciation to the Local Organizing Committee.

6.2 Symposium 2011

It was noted that the Local Organizing Committee for the 2011 CSZ meeting at the University of Ottawa would require a draft of plans for the Parasitology Symposium by September 2010, in order to ensure symposium support.

6.3 New Business

Concerns were raised concerning participation in the section, not only by established Parasitologists, but also by students. It was suggested that the executive develop a plan to increase membership in the section in order to maintain section status within the CSZ. Funding was no longer available to support the parasite modules and David Marcogliese questioned the need for their continued existence. Al Shostak suggested that the formal continuation of the parasite module was no longer needed, and those present agreed.

7.0 Adjournment

The May 2010 AGM was adjourned on motion (Macrogliese).
