Bothria and Bothridia

Bothria

Bothria are muscular grooves that provide attachment by pinching host tissue between them.

Pseudophyllidean cestodes such as Bothriocephalus (left) and Diphyllobothrium (right) make use of bothria (arrows).

Bothridia

Bothridia are semicircular, muscular structures that act by pinching host tissue.

This cestode has bothridia (B) supplemented by tentacles (T). Note that the bothridia look superficially like suckers, but that they are horse-shoe shaped and not a continuous circle.
