The Platyhelminthes, or flatworms, have numerous parasitic and free-living representatives. Some groups bear many resemblances to their free-living relatives, but others are highly modified. Some species can cause serious and even fatal disease in their hosts, but the majority are relatively harmless in most situations, causing only mild clinical signs and localized pathogenic responses.
