Giardiasis is a common disease throughout the world. The tremendous numbers of parasites that can build up, even after ingestion of only a few cysts from contaminated water, can cover a large part of the intestinal epithelium, interfering with absorption and causing diarrhea, dehydration and weight loss. Fortunately, the disease is not fatal.
