These parasites of the lungs of amphibians alternate between free-living and parasitic life-styles. The free-living adults are small (less than 1 mm long) while the parasitic forms are much larger (up to 10 mm long). Larvae develop within the body of the free-living female, consuming her tissues and killing her.
