Chiggers, particularly Leptotrombidium spp., cause scrub itch (a localized skin reaction to the mite's feeding site), and are also the vectors of scrub typhus or tsutsugamushi fever, which is a rickettsial disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. This disease is common in southeast Asia but is also present in the United States.
