These ticks are common parasites of mammals, including humans, in North America. They are blood feeders and can cause sufficient blood loss to seriously stress their hosts. Some species spend their lives on a single host. Others leave the host after each blood meal and then find a new host. These latter ones can transmit various diseases, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
