Cryptosporidiosis is an emerging disease threat in North America. The parasite infects mammals, including cattle and humans, and produces a tiny, resistant cyst which can contaminate water supplies. The disease is characterized by severe diarrhea which may take many weeks to resolve, and immunity is short-lived.
