These are commonly called coccidia. They infect epithelial cells birds and mammals, and transmit from host to host by means of a resistant oocyst which contaminates water or food. Coccidiosis is a major problem in the raising of domestic animals such as poultry or cattle which may be maintained in crowded conditions. The disease is self-limiting but causes severe diarrhea and dehydration and is often fatal.
