Schistosoma granuloma

Eggs of schistosomes are highly antigenic and induce a strong inflammatory reaction. This photo is a section through liver tissue. A band or normal liver tissue, with it large sinusoids, is present to the right. At the left are sections through about a dozen eggs, which are oval and relatively clear. Surrounding the eggs is a dense granuloma formed by accumulation of host inflammatory cells. This granuloma is large enough to be visible to the naked eye. Surrounding the dense area of the granuloma are numerous nuclei if other inflammatory cells that are accumulating in the area.
