Entamoeba coli cyst

The cysts of amoebas are spheroidal and contain a multinucleated stage of the parasite. The number and morphology of the nuclei are important aids in identifying the species of amoeba.

This photo is of a cyst of Entamoeba coli. It has eight nuclei and the karyosome (or endosome) is located peripherally on the nucleus. It is rare that all nuclei will be in focus at once. In this cyst only two nuclei are clearly in focus and a few more are visible but out of focus. The peripheral endosome is visible in one nucleus.
