As it penetrates a snail host, the cercaria sheds its tail and the body migrates to a location near the kidney. Then the parasite curls up and secretes a protective cyst around itself. It is now an encysted metacercaria. The metacercaria has minimal activity because its function is to promote lengthy survival of the parasite until the infected snail is eaten by a definitive host.
