Hymenolepis cysticercoids

The cysticercoid stage takes about 2 weeks to develop after eggs are ingested by a flour beetle. This photo illustrates a dissected beetle that contained about 30 cysticercoids. The cysticercoids are the white ellipsoids present mainly in the top half of the photo. The cysticercoids occur in the thorax and abdomen of the beetle, which in this photo would have been about the length of the beetle elytra just to the right of the head. As you can see, the cysticercoids may, when present in large numbers, occupy a considerable amount of space in the body of the host.
