Moniliformis egg

The egg is passes in the feces of the rat definitive host. The egg must resist desiccation because it is deposited on land. Note the thick layers of egg membranes. The acanthor is the oval organism at the centre of the egg. Some of the blade-like hooks that the acanthor uses to penetrate the gut of its insect intermediate host are visible at the anterior end of the acanthor (top).
