Eimeria pathology

The liver contains a system of bile ducts (B) lined with epithelium. The several rounds of asexual reproduction undergone by coccidia such as Eimeria stiedae can produce millions of merozoites, each infecting and ultimately destroying a new epithelial cell.

In this photo of a section through rabbit liver, much of the epithelium lining the main duct on the bottom, and the numerous minor ducts above, is infected.
