After a few rounds of schizogony, merozoites develop into gametocytes instead of more schizonts. Eimeria produces microgametocytes and macrogametocytes. The microgametocytes produce numerous, flagellated microgametes which find and fertilize macrogametes.
This photo shows a section of rabbit bile duct containing at least five gametocytes. The concentration of granules around their periphery suggests that they are macrogametocytes. They are not identical in appearance because each has been sectioned in a slightly different plane.
