Plasmodium exflagellation

Within minutes of being released from the erythrocyte within the mosquito gut, the microgametocyte undergoes nuclear division and forms a number of microgametes. Each microgamete is little more than a nucleus surrounded by a flagellum. The microgametes swim until they find and fertilize a macrogamete. This photo shows numerous thread-like microgametes prior to their detachment from the microgametocyte.
