Trichinella female

The adult female of Trichinella is about 3-4 mm long. In this photo the anterior end of the worm is to the top. The inset shows the area of the vulva. Anteriorly, (to the left) is the stichosome. Posteriorly is a large uterus containing hundreds of newborn larvae. This parasite is ovoviviparous, producing eggs but having them hatch while still within the uterus. At the posterior end of the worm is its single ovary.

In the inset photo, some of the stichocytes are visible at the bottom, and the intestine is visible on the right side of the photo, gradually obscured by the uterus towards the top of the inset. Two coiled newborn larvae are visible at the top left of the inset.
