Movies on the life of Giardia lamblia

G lamblia in culture  Trophozoites can be maintained in in vitro culture. Large populations can build up. When left alone, the trophozoites use their flagella to adhere tightly to the substrate, just as they would to adhere to the intestinal epithelium. Only occasionally do they detach and move around. Densities of trophozoites in this scene are comparable to those that can occur in the host: a carpet of parasites covering the intestinal epithelium.  Windows media download

G lamblia trophozoite  This magnified view of a single trophozoite reveals the two "sucking disks" at the anterior of the parasite, and the vigorous action of the flagella which creates the suction in the adhesive disk. If the flagella were to stop moving, the trophozoite would detach.  Windows media download
