Trichomonas

Various species occur in the intestinal or reproductive tracts of vertebrates. Trophozoites multiply by binary fission. Cysts are rare, so transmission between hosts is usually by direct contact. Species that infect the reproductive tract are transmitted venereally, others that live in the crop of birds transmit to the young when food is regurgitated to feed them. Fecal-oral contamination may be another route of infection.
