Various species are parasites of birds, mammals (including humans) other vertebrates and even some invertebrates. Trophozoites live in the intestine and feed on intestinal contents by endocytosis. As the intestinal contents begin drying in the colon, trophozoites secrete a cyst wall and can survive externally in water. They are reacquired by drinking contaminated water.
