Coracidium of Triaenophorus

(Redrawn after Kuperman 1981)

The oncosphere that develops within the egg also possesses a ciliated external layer that swells up after hatching. The cilia keep the oncosphere in the water column and the large size resulting from the external layer attract predators such as the copepod first intermedate host. The hooks in the oncosphere are used to penetrate the gut of the copepod after ingestion.
