Stages of Plasmodium in the mosquito gut

(Redrawn after Markell and Voge 1971)

Once in the mosquito gut the microgametocyte undergoes division to produce a number of thread-like microgametes in a process known as "exflagellation", because the microgametocyte appears to develop flagella. These gametes fertilize the macrogametocyte and the resulting zygote is an ookinete.
