Muscle stage larvae of Trichinella

(Redrawn after Brown and Belding 1964)

Muscle stage larvae are still first-stage larvae, like the newborn larvae, and have not yet molted. However, they have grown considerably in size. After they enter a skeletal muscle cell they induce it to transform into a "nurse cell". Once liberated by digestive enzymes in a subsequent host, the larvae are liberated and then undergo their remaining larval molts.
