Meeting of the Conservation Ecology Discussion Group
The next meeting of the Conservation Ecology Discussion Group will be December 4, 12:30 pm-1:30 pm in M-332.  The papers are:  "Species diversity or biodiversity". Journal of Environmental Management 2005 75:89-92 AND "Conserving biodiversity coldspots". American Scientist 2003 91:344-351. 
 
ACWS Lecture Series
The University of Alberta Chapter of the Wildlife Society lecture series presents: "Translating Words into Actions: Global Biodiversity Conventions, National Strategies and Rural People; Lessons Learned in the Developing World" presented by Kashif M. Sheikh PhD., P. Biol. Lecture will take place on Monday, December 10, 2007 at 5:00 p.m., in CW 313 of Biological Sciences Building. Light refreshments (juice/pop) will be provided.
 
Ecology Movie Night
Today, Thursday the 29th of November we will be showing "Qallunaat: Why White People Are Funny" at 5pm in CW410 (the conference room next to the cafeteria). Come, bring your lab mates and a few snacks if you like.
Funny? What's so funny about white people, otherwise known as Qallunaat to the Inuit? Well, among other curious behaviours, Qallunaat ritualistically greet each other with inane salutations, repress natural bodily functions, complain a lot about being cold, and seem to want to dominate the world.
This week's film, "Qallunaat: Why White People Are Funny", is a humbling portrait of what it must feel like to be the object of the white man's gaze.

BGSA is Looking for Job Fair Coordinator
The BGSA is currently looking to fill a volunteer position in the department. We need a JOB FAIR COORDINATOR. The job fair will happen in mid January (tentatively January 15th or 16th) and is a way for graduate students to advertise and recruit undergraduate students for summer technician/assistant positions. This is a especially crucial for ecology students looking for field assistants for the coming summer. The job is relatively easy. You just need to get grad students/research labs to sign up for a spot in the job fair, ensure that they all have a designated spot to put up their information/posters, and do the advertising for it. There is an information binder available with all the details from last year's coordinator.

NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships
This award matches the interest of a faculty member, the needs of an industrial sponsor and the skills of the student. Two awards are available. The NSERC IPS1 is for 1st and 2nd years, or 2nd and 3rd years, of postgraduate study. The NSERC IPS2 is for 3rd and 4th years, or 4th and 5th years, of postgraduate study. For full-time students, NSERC pays $15,000 per year; the Industrial Sponsor must provide $6,000 per year minimum. For part-time students, NSERC pays $6,900 per year for up to 4 years; Industrial Sponsor must provide $2,750 per year minimum. There is no deadline for this award. CNST Scholarship

 Northern Resident Scholarship

Research Support Opportunity in Arctic Environmental Studies

Mackenzie King Open Scholarships 
Value: $9,000. Graduates of any Canadian university who engage in postgraduate study in any field, in Canada or elsewhere. One Open Scholarship is awarded annually. Award is based on high academic achievements (all A's or very nearly so), personal qualities and demonstrated aptitudes. Consideration will also be given to the applicant's proposed program of study. The Kennett Y. Spencer Memorial Scholarship

Value:  MSc -$23,000, PhD -$26,000 (plus $1,500 Research Allowance)  Eligibility: Students entering a MSc or PhD  graduate program IN SCIENCE or engineering.
MSc Students:
As of December 31, 2007, eligible students will have completed not more than 12 months of a master’s program.
PhD Students:
As of December 31, 2007, eligible students will have completed not more than 24 months of a doctoral program. For doctoral students who transferred from a masters program prior to completing the master’s degree, eligibility is calculated based on the start date of the master’s program.

ACWS Post-Graduate Award

The Alberta Chapter annually presents academic student awards to promote interest and reward excellence in the field of wildlife conservation. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in wildlife management. Student submissions for each award category are reviewed by ACTWS member committees. Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize
Value: $5,000 Eligibility: Available to full-time PhD candidates who have completed two or more years of their PhD program and are actively engaged in thesis research at the time the award is offered. Major scholarship holders may apply unless restricted by the granting agency. A student may hold the award only once. All fields are eligible for funding. No restrictions on citizenship. Twenty-five awards are granted each year. Selection is based partly on academic merit, but research accomplishment while registered in a doctoral program at the University of Alberta is the major criterion. Dissertation Fellowship
Value: $22,000 plus tuition and fees up to the maximum cost for registration in the equivalent of 9 normal credit weights in courses or thesis research per term (or Thesis 919) during the Fall/Winter Terms (September to April), as well as the International Graduate Student Differential Fee, if applicable.
Eligibility: Designed for students who have a firm expectation of completing a doctoral program within 12 months following tenure. Recipients must commence their tenure between 1 May and 1 October, and must pass their candidacy examinations before taking up the award. No other duties, teaching or otherwise, may be undertaken, and recipients must be working full-time on their program. Recipients are not eligible for any further assistance from scholarship or assistantship funds after the conclusion of the 12-month tenure. No restrictions on citizenship. Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship
Value: $27,000 a year plus tuition and fees up to the maximum cost for registration in the equivalent of 9 normal credit weights (equivalent to 18 fee index units) in courses or thesis research per term (or Thesis 919) during the Fall/Winter Terms (September to April), plus $700. The scholarship also will cover the International Graduate Student Differential Fee, if applicable. There is also a one-time $2,000 research grant.
Eligibility: Offered to outstanding students registered in, or admissible to, a doctoral program. Applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate work (master's or doctoral level) before start of tenure; tenure to begin 1 May or 1 September. Granted for two years (subject to review after the first year). No restrictions on citizenship. All fields are eligible for funding. Approximately 20 awards are granted each year. This scholarship may be awarded for a 12-month period, 8-month period, or a 4-month period, depending on eligibility. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents at the time of application. All fields are eligible for funding. Approximately 70 awards are granted each year. The Lorraine Allison Scholarship - The Arctic Institute of North America
Value: $2,000 Eligibility: You must be enrolled at a Canadian university, in a graduate program related to northern issues. Graduate students in programs related to northern issues, whose application best addresses: 1) academic excellence, 2) a demonstrated commitment to northern Canadian research, and 3) desire for research results to be beneficial to northerners, especially Native northerners. FGSR Research Abroad Grant
The grant provides current UofA graduate students the opportunity to advance their thesis research by conducting research at a university outside Canada. The grant is valued at up to $2,000 for travel, plus up to $2,000 per month (to a maximum of four months) for living expenses and other costs associated with conducting thesis research abroad. Free Infant Car Seat
Free infant car seat approved for use in the UK/Europe. We have a Graco infant car seat with base that is about 4 years old and is not safety approved for use in Canada. However it is currently approved by the EU. So if you have a baby and are travelling to Europe or know someone who is please make use of it or it goes in the landfill.

Red Cross Urges Canadians to Give Generously in Wake of Cyclone in Gangladesh
On November 15th 2007, Cyclone Sidr slammed the coast of Bangladesh
leaving a trail of unimaginable destruction in its wake.
As the impact of Cyclone Sidr on Bangladesh is becoming apparent, the Canadian Red Cross is appealing to Canadians to help assist more than 3 million people affected by the devastating storm. Ferocious winds and widespread flooding have destroyed an estimated 700,000 homes and left millions of people in urgent need of shelter and basic supplies.
In response to this disaster, the Canadian International Development Agency has generously donated $250,000 to support Red Cross relief efforts in the area. The international Federation in Geneva has also released $217,000 from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund to support Bangladesh Red Crescent relief operations. Canadians have already given closed to $20,000 on the Canadian Red Cross website since Friday, but much more is needed.
Funds raised will be used to provide survivors with basic supplies, emergency shelter, and to ensure people have access to health care and clean water. More detailed assessments are being carreid out to determine the longer-term needs of the affected communities.
Canadians wishing to make a financial donation may give online at http://www.redcross.ca/, call 1-800-418-1111 or contact their local Canadian Red Cross office. The 24-hour toll free line accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked " Bangladesh Floods" and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.

A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they 
were on the way to church service,
'And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?'  
One bright little girl replied,
'Because people are sleeping.'
 
 A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3.  
The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.  
Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. 
'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say,  
'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'  
Kevin turned to his younger brother and said,
