Entomologist/Insect Ecologist - 24 month appointment at the Postdoctoral level in the Department of Entomology, Cornell University, New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva, NY 14456. Starting in January 1, 2006 or until filled.

 

 

 

RESEARCH: The successful applicant will take a leading role in USDA-PMAP funded research investigating alternative strategies for managing onion maggot (Anthomyiidae) in onion. Onion maggot is a major pest of onion in the northern US and Canada. Management has become increasingly more difficult because this pest has developed resistance to insecticides. Research will focus on understanding dispersal of onion maggot flies in onion fields and to use this information for optimizing the utility of several novel management strategies. This position requires collaboration with team members that have expertise in ecology, insect behavior, and pest management.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in entomology, insect ecology or related discipline. Desire individual with background and/or interest in applied insect ecology, insect behavior and IPM. Experience with pest management in vegetable cropping systems is also desirable.

 

 

SALARY: Starting $30,000/year with an excellent benefits package.

DEPT OF ENTOMOLOGY AND NEMATOLOGY - ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Duties and Responsibilities: This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 10% teaching (College of Agricultural & Life Sciences), 20% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), and 70% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service), available in the Department of Entomology and Nematology, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Department of Entomology and Nematology. Duties will include:
 
Extension - The apiculturist will provide educational programs for development and maintenance of healthy, profitable bee colonies to commercial and hobbyist beekeepers, resulting in improved honey production and pollination services. Cooperation with beekeeping organizations, county extension faculty, and the Florida agricultural industries, and the Florida Department of Agriculture is expected. Also, the apiculturist will develop educational programs involving bees and other insects for Florida youth, including 4-H, pre-school, public school, and home school education. The apiculturist will coordinate the Department’s outreach activities.
 
Research - The apiculturist will conduct and publish organized research on issues related to apiculture. The apiculturist is expected to solicit extramural funds to support his/her research programs.
 
Instruction - Mentoring of graduate students with interest in apiculture or youth programs is required. The apiculturist will participate in graduate and undergraduate instruction, including distance education.
 
The faculty member will actively participate in graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing the results with their graduate students. Implementation of the Affirmative Action program of the University of Florida is required.
 
 Qualifications: A Ph.D. with training and experience in entomology and a strong background in apiculture or a closely related field is required. Experience with youth (e.g., 4-H programs) and Cooperative Extension is highly desirable. It is expected that the apiculturist will be versed in current and appropriate skills relevant to his/her research. Postdoctoral experience is desirable. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS=core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Facilities available to support the candidate’s research include the Analytical Toxicology Core Laboratory, the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnological Research (ICBR), the neurophysiology core at the School of Pharmacy, Brain Core and Whitney Lab, and the USDA laboratories.
 
 Florida ranked third in U.S. honey production in 2004, with approximately 200,000 honeybee colonies. With an average yield of 98 pounds per colony, Florida produced over 20 million pounds of honey in 2004 valued at more than $20 million. The State of Florida is somewhat unique as it is the home of large combined population of resident and non-resident, or migratory, beekeepers. This population swells and recedes in a cycle as beekeepers move into and out of the state based on the seasons and economic opportunities.
 
 There are approximately 1200 registered beekeepers in the state managing, yearly, 200,000 or more colonies of honey bees for general and specialty honey production, pollination of citrus, berry, cucurbit and other vegetable crops within the state. Many of these beekeepers with their colonies leave the state and follow nectar and pollination opportunities as spring and summer move north, returning again in the autumn to start the cycle once more.
 
 Florida is known as an Agricultural Sentinel State for its first finds of agricultural pests and diseases. The Apiculture Industry in Florida has not been immune to first finds of devastating pests and parasites of honey bees. Over approximately the last decade, the industry has had to adapt and adjust to tracheal mites, varroa mites and the small live beetle. These introduced pests have challenged the health and vitality of the industry in Florida. The emerging challenge of the spread of Africanized Hybrid Bee genetics within the state will be a major issue in the immediate years to come. Interactions among the public sector, agriculture and visitors to the state will require extensive educational planning and outreach.
 
 The Entomology-Nematology department is strongly committed to educating Florida’s youth about insects and beekeeping. There is significant demand for insect-related educational programs from public and private schools, summer programs, and after-school programs such as 4-H. 4-H is the nonformal youth development program of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) and the Florida Cooperative Extension System. The Florida 4-H Program mission is to create supportive environments for diverse youth and adult to reach their fullest potential. Last year 241,000 of Florida’s youth in 4-H interacted with more than 13,374 volunteer 4-H leaders. Increasingly, electronic media are used to reach youth.

The Department of Entomology, Soils and Plant Sciences at Clemson University seeks candidates for a 12-month tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in entomology. The position is located at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center, Florence, SC and is 75% Extension and 25% research. Responsibilities: State-wide Extension responsibilities will include responding to arthropod questions and problems in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina, especially with respect to agronomic crop production.
 
The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded, nationally and internationally recognized, research program pertaining to arthropods of field crops grown in the Pee Dee region. The research program is expected to compliment the Extension program.
 
In addition to securing external funding, publishing in refereed journals and advising at the graduate level, collaboration with colleagues within and outside the department and other academic, state, and federal institutions, and producer and commodity organizations will be vital components of this position.
 
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in entomology, with emphasis on insects of field crops, or related fields is required. A research and extension record sufficient to meet Associate Professor promotion requirements is necessary to apply at the Associate Professor level.
 
Salary: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
