Awards
At the recent Microscopical Society of Canada (MSC) meeting in Montreal, two Department of Biological Sciences members were in the limelight. Glenn Elliott, a Ph. D student with Dr Sally Leys, was awarded the Gerard T. Simon Award, for microscopy in Life Sciences. This is the second time that Glenn has garnered this award.
At the same meeting, Doug Craig, Professor Emeritus, was recognized, along with two other senior members of MSC, for services rendered. Dr. Craig represented Alberta as a Councillor, from 1981-1984. He was First Vice President, President and Past President from 1984-1988 and then Secretary from 1988-1995. He was awarded MSC Honorary Membership in 1993.
Programming Phones for 10-Digit Dialing Will Disrupt Call Forwarding on Sets
The demand for new numbers in Alberta will soon exceed the supply. After September 8-12, 2008, you won't be able to make 7-digit local calls, but will have to dial the area code in front of the 7-digit phone number. You should plan ahead to ensure your telecommunications services are ready for the change.
To help customers prepare, the industry is phasing in a "permissive dialing period" from June 23-28, 2008. During that period, when you dial 7 digits for a local call you will hear a network announcement reminding you to use 10-digit dialing the next time you make a local call, and then your call will be connected. Please note that data transmissions may be affected by the announcement, making it vital that you reprogram your phones and communications equipment as soon as possible. The announcement will no longer come on once full 10-digit dialing is phased in over a week in September.
If you make a 7-digit local call after late June 2008, you will hear a recorded message reminding you to dial all 10 digits the next time. Warning! This message may disrupt data transmission in certain cases (Internet, fax machines, etc.).
If you make a 7-digit local call after September 8-12, 2008, you will hear a network announcement asking you to hang up and redial using the area code.
You will not be required to change your existing telephone number. All 3-digit numbers, including 211, 311, 411, 611, 811, 911 and emergency service (where applicable) will remain the same .
Helpful tips:
Start making the necessary changes right away.
Reprogram various communications systems and equipment, including:
Speed dial lists
Modems and Internet connections
Telephones, including call options and functions (e.g. call forwarding)
Computers and fax machines
Databases, Auto-dial systems, Cellular phones and other wireless devices Contact your alarm company to ensure that your security systems are set up for 10-digit dialing.
How does this affect me at the university?
Phones can already dial 10 digits for local calling and 5 digit dialing will remain for campus calling with 248 and 492 numbers plus Campus St Jean numbers staring with 465 and 485.
The Call Forward feature on university phones will be reprogrammed to accommodate this change and this will cause a de-activation of this feature if it is active on a set.
Please watch over the next few days and manually re-activate this feature if required. Call AICT Telecom at 23422 for questions or visit
