University of Alberta Conference Funds

The University Conference Fund has been modified to provide more streamlined access to this funding. In lieu of regular competitions that are adjudicated centrally, the funds have been allocated to the Faculties for distribution at their discretion in support of suitable University-hosted conferences. Please contact your Research Facilitation Office (betty.peavey@ualberta.ca) to apply for support to host a conference.

Worldwide Universities Network

The Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) is a global alliance of 16 research intensive universities drawn from the UK, Europe, North America, China and Australia. The WUN Research Development Fund offers grants of up to £15,000 to support research collaborations. Programs may include exploratory research initiatives, targeted workshops, faculty exchanges and the formation of collaborative networks, among other activities. Applications that incorporate a research mobility component for early career researchers and postgraduate students are encouraged. The internal U of A adjudication deadline is October 29, 2010.

The Research Mobility Fund provides support for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research staff to establish and cultivate international research collaboration by spending time abroad at another WUN institution. These funded placements may vary in length (up to a maximum three months) and can be related to a wide variety of research areas. Applications for this type of funding are accepted on a continuous basis.

Please contact Dr. Stefan Scherer in the local WUN office within the Office of the Provost and Vice-President for more information about both opportunities.

Using Emotional Intelligence to Improve Performance

This workshop, based on the work of Daniel Goleman, is aimed at staff members who would like to increase their knowledge of the competencies associated with emotional intelligence. It will be of interest to staff members who are anxious to improve their own emotional intelligence with the goal of working more effectively with others.  In this session we will cover a definition of emotional intelligence (sometimes referred to as EI), common misconceptions, and five core competencies associated with emotional intelligence, and how to develop skills to enhance EI. Participants will have a chance to explore their own EQ (emotional quotient) and develop an action plan to improve any of the skills associated with EI.

Although the workshop is open to all staff, supervisors may find it particularly beneficial in identifying their own strengths and weaknesses related to emotional intelligence and helping them develop others in these important areas.

Canada Savings Bonds Online E-Campaign

Human Resource Services is participating in the Canada Savings Bonds online E-Campaign.

The E-Campaign is a secure online environment that allows monthly paid staff to sign up for the Canada Savings Bonds payroll deduction or make changes to existing plans.

By participating in the Payroll Savings Program your bond purchases are deducted monthly and start earning interest immediately.  Monthly paid staff will be able to access the E-Campaign site from October 4 to October 31

How to participate for the first time:

1.      Decide on the amount you would like to contribute per month

2.      Go to https://www.e-campaign.csb.gc.ca

3.      Select your preferred language and scroll down to Option 3

4.      Complete the online form using Organization ID:  12206

Once you are signed up, your automatic deductions will start in December and continue until you want to make a change or stop your purchase. You can access your bonds at any time online at http://csb.gc.ca/employees by selecting Manage My Payroll Savings Plan.

Important Updates for October 2010:

1.    Canadians will no longer be able to open new Government sponsored Canada RSP (Retirement Savings Plan) or Canada RIF (Retirement Income Fund) accounts.

This change means that employees will no longer be able to open new Canada RSP plans.  Employees who currently contribute to a Canada RSP plan through payroll deductions will be able to either  increase or decrease contributions.

2.    Canada Savings Bonds will mature at the end of their individual terms.

As per their terms and conditions, Canada Savings Bonds will mature at the end of their term.  At that time, Canada Savings bonds purchased in the Payroll Savings Program will either be rolled over in the next available series or paid out.  You will be notified at the appropriate time.

3.    The Canada Savings Bonds Program sales period will be shortened from six to two months.

More information about this event is posted on the MCC website at http://www.midcanadaafs.org/wordpress/

It is for both members and non-members, and should be considered as a chance for all aquatic types to get to know each other better and, hopefully, a chance for the MCC to recruit a few new members.

Applied Aquatics will sponsor a couple of rounds and the MCC will put in $100 or so for appetizers.

If anyone is interested in attending this event please contact Brianne Lunn (blunn@ualberta.ca) to carpool or feel free to just show up!

Learning Management System Announcement

The University of Alberta has been using Blackboard Vista (aka WebCT) as its centrally supported Learning Management System (LMS) since 1998. Blackboard has announced that support for Vista will terminate as of January 2013. This forces the University to adopt a new LMS for eClass.

After five months of consultations, the decision has been made to centrally adopt Moodle. Over the next two and a half years, we will work with faculties, departments, and instructors to migrate Vista courses into Moodle and educate the university community on the new LMS. This is a huge project, as it affects over 6,000 courses, the instructors of these courses, and most students on campus. There will be strong central support to ensure a smooth transition.

We are in the process of putting into place:

  1. LMS Migration Steering Committee to oversee the move to Moodle, and
  2. A project manager to do the planning and manage the people resources that will be committed to this effort.

There will be regular communications to the community on the progress of the migration.

Instructors please do not stop developing new content in Vista. The conversion to Moodle will be largely automated, meaning that your new content will be moved to the new LMS at the appropriate time.

Note that the LMS decision only affects the centrally-supported LMS. Usage of the central LMS is not mandated.

This Week's Funny

Actual Label Instructions on Consumer Goods

1. On a Sears hairdryer: Do not use while sleeping.

(and that's the only time I have to work on my hair.)

2. On a bag of Fritos:

You could be a winner! No purchase necessary.

Details inside.

(the shoplifter special?)

3. On a bar of Dial soap:

"Directions: Use like regular soap."

(and that would be how???....)

4. On some Swanson frozen dinners:

"Serving suggestion: Defrost."

(but, it's "just" a suggestion.)

5. On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom):

Don 't turn upside down."

(well...duh, a bit late, huh!)

6. On Marks &Spencer Bread Pudding:

"Product will be hot after heating."

(...and you thought????...)

7. On packaging for a Rowenta iron:

"Do not iron clothes on body."

(but wouldn't this save me more time?)

8. On Boot's Children Cough Medicine:

"Do not drive a car or operate machinery after taking this medication."

(We could do a lot to reduce the rate of construction accidents if we could just get

those 5-year-olds with head-colds off those forklifts.)

9. On Nytol Sleep Aid:

"Warning: May cause drowsiness."

(and... I'm taking this because???...)

10. On most brands of Christmas lights:

"For indoor or outdoor use only."

(as opposed to... what?)

11. On a Japanese food processor:
"Not to be used for the other use."
(now, somebody out there, help me on this. I'm a bit curious.)

12. On Sainsbury's peanuts:
"Warning: contains nuts."
(talk about a news flash)

13. On an American Airlines packet of nuts:
"Instructions: Open packet, eat nuts."
(Step 3: maybe, uh... fly Delta?)

14. On a child's superman costume:
"Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly."
(I don't blame the company. I blame the parents for this one.)
